Character Biography

Winifred, or "Fred" as she is known to everyone, was born in Dallas, Texas as the only child to Roger and Trish Burkle. She had never travelled far from home, so when she was accepted at UCLA, she packed up her belongings and moved. She began as a history major but quickly changed to Physics with the promise of the Graduate Program at UCLA and Professor Seidel's encouragement. Working part-time at Stewart Brunell Public Library brought her closer to her love of books, but it was also her downfall. Unknown to her, the professor she admired sent her to the demon dimension known as Pylea. There, humans were slaves known as "cows", whereas demons ruled -- it is, in fact, Lorne's homeland. By simply opening the wrong book, Fred was trasnported to Pylea for five years, where she escaped capture by hiding in the various caves until a vision from Cordelia led Angel Investigations on a search for the missing girl.

After she was rescued (along with Cordelia), Fred remained with the group at the Hyperion Hotel. Her initial encounter with Angel in Pylea led to a brief crush on the "handsome man" who had rescued her, and once Fred was encouraged to leave her room, she began to adjust to a more normal life. She started dating Charles Gunn, not knowing that at the same time Wesley Wyndam-Pryce had developed his own crush upon her. The tensions between the group escalated when Wesley took it upon himself to "save" the baby Connor from Angel. Believing him to be a "traitor" of sorts to their family, Fred informed him never to return to the Hyperion once Connor had been kidnapped.

A teenaged Connor's appearance, however, caused the rift to grow further. Fred found herself trying to keep the entire operation running along with Gunn once Connor secretly left Angel at the bottom of the ocean floor. With Cordelia ascended to a higher plane and Lorne held hostage in Las Vegas, Fred began to come more into her own and less of a "damsel in distress". After rescuing both Angel & Lorne, sending Connor away, and reuiniting with an amnesiac Cordy, the group performed a spell that created further tensions as Fred learned of her own feelings for Wesley in return. She kept turning to him for advice -- especially once she learned the truth about Professor Seidel. Intent on killing him, Fred was stopped only at the last minute but Gunn, who killed the man instead. This act broke up the once-happy pair.

After Fred (as the only member of the team able to see the goddess Jasmine as a threat) escaped death once more and helped stop the "world peace" the demon-goddess offered at a price of human deaths, she was offered a position at Wolfram & Hart. While the law firm had been the enemy for quite some time, Angel Investigations decided to "work from within" to make a difference. Cordelia was in a coma still, and so Fred had lost her boyfriend and best friend all within a short amount of time. Thanks to the deal Angel made with Wolfram & Hart, however, she lost the memory of Connor's existance as well. She quite happily became the Head of the Science Division and took it upon herself to re-corporealize Spike when he joined the group. Knox, a member of her science team, developed a crush on her but Fred stopped dating him once she realized she truly wanted to be with Wesley. Their happiness was short-lived, however, once she touched a sarcophagus that contained the essence of Illyria, a God-King, and was infected by the Old One. Her soul was lost forever and Fred died in Wesley's arms since there was no cure. He was left with Illyria inhabiting Fred's body, but the girl known as Winifred Burkle was gone.

Disclaimer: I do not own, nor did I create, the character of Fred Burkle. She is the creation of Joss Whedon, and "Angel" is owned by Mutant Enemy Productions. I make no profit from this writing, and only play with her in [info]quotable_muse. This journal is likely to contain adult material (violence, language, sexuality) and should be considered for mature readers only. All prompt answers will be based on canon, but for RP purposes Fred will be returned to life by TPTB post-"Not Fade Away" with no memories of anything after she touches the sarcophagus in "A Hole in the World".
